VAMP
Simply jubilantly juniper-y
We wanted to start things as we mean to go on and for us with gin, that is a gin for the purists. No adjuncts, just classic botanicals that make gin the spirit it is. Admittedly we are in the pursuit flavour so this is more on the powerful side but it wouldn’t be a true Moonshiners spirit if it wasn’t.
Vamp for us is big and bold, but its also our reimagining. We’ve made a lot of gin in our previous endeavours and experienced it soar in popularity and then got quite bored of it if we’re honest. We want to fall back in love with it.
Gin is a beautiful thing when its done well.
TASTING NOTES
Juniper, crisp, clean.
Mostly clear with a slight iridescent botanical haze
Pine, clean citrus and some warming spice notes
Juniper forward, smooth
Classic gin notes pleasantly linger.
Conclusion
A gin as gin should be
KEY INGREDIENTS & METHOD
A Traditional botanical bill consisting of mainly juniper along with coriander, angelica and lemon - we’ve kept is simple and classic.
When making gin we’re rectifying, i.e. adding botanical beauty to existing alcohol, rather than creating new booze from grain (true distilling). The alcohol we use is neutral grain spirit, which provides a wonderfully blank canvas.
The rectifying process uses the still to capture the glorious essence of the botanicals by boiling them so they release their natural oils which then impart into the alcohol.
This is the standard process for making gin. What you’ve heard is true – in essence, gin is kind of like a flavoured vodka. However that somewhat belittles the je ne sais quoi.

Rather than a nod to provenance or flavour, this tells you about the method used to make the gin and has its origins as a stamp of quality. Back in the early days of gin in the 18th century, there were some right cowboy distillers putting some pretty awful stuff in their gins. Enter London Dry Gin… It can only be called a London Dry Gin if you meet a few key criteria…
Some sugar can be added after distillation for sweetness and still pass the LDG test but we don’t bother – we add a touch of sweetness with a clever selection of botanicals. Besides, in our humble opinion, it isn’t meant to be sweet.
So back in olde worlde times, if it was a London Dry Gin you were drinking you had a bit of reassurance it wasn’t going to be totally terrible and/or going to kill you. Always nice to know.
To get the best out of the botanicals we distil super fast – that means getting the still hot as a m*therf*cker ASAP.
This gets rid of the bits we don’t want in our batch out in the heads cut. We only capture the best part of the distillation batch – the hearts.
For us this is just until our botanicals are spent and no further, so Moonshiner’s gin is as flavoursome and smooth as can be.
